The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 ended just two weeks ago. This year 3,600 exhibitors showcased new gadgets, software and services innovations they believe will take off in 2016. Like every CES, there is a mix of amazing, intriguing and downright ridiculous technology on display.
Coming back to reality, as people on the front line have come to expect more of technology, the relationship between the CIO, IT and business users has shifted. If there’s a problem to solve, you can buy solutions directly from external providers via the cloud. What started with Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to work is already evolving into Bring Your Own Software (BYOS). The reality, of course, is that IT will wind up supporting it when it goes south. The reality is IT needs to be part of the equation to ensure the security and quality of any new system or software on their network. However, they can easily be written off as enemies of progress. If IT always spells NO, the landscape is likely to become increasingly lawless and chaotic.
Every business wants to leverage whatever technology and ‘secret-sauce’ they can to develop a sustainable competitive advantage. IT can play a proactive role in reaching the full potential of technology to transform the capability and growth of the business. The threats and the risks associated with security, compliance and access haven’t gone away, but with the right consultative advice and strategy the enterprise can change their position from risk avoidance to risk management. With that shift, it is possible to create a workforce that is markedly more efficient – and capable of providing an enhanced experience to both their clients and their employees.
